Patient Case Study: Perimenopause
This patient came to me after struggling for years with chronic constipation, hormone imbalance, and low energy. With a family history of ulcerative colitis, she knew something deeper was at play and came to me to get answers.
Photos taken 5 weeks apart. Patient has lost body fat and maintained muscle mass. Weight loss was not the main goal but was a byproduct of the Gut and Hormone Reset Programme.
At Freya Clinic we ran comprehensive stool testing, which revealed significantly elevated Calprotectin, (a marker of gut inflammation), dysbiosis, and the presence of an intestinal parasite — likely picked up during regular overseas travel. A structured, bi-phasic gut protocol was implemented to address infection, reverse inflammation, and rebalance the microbiome. A protein-rich, anti-inflammatory diet supported nutrient repletion, metabolic repair and hormonal resilience
Results After 3 Months
- 2.5kg weight loss in the first 5 weeks — with lean muscle maintained
- Multiple dress sizes down and experiencing no bloating
- Significant improvement in energy, focus mood and sleep
- Calmer digestion and daily, effortless bowel movements
Patient Words
“Thanks to Angela, I feel like a whole new person”
Practitioner Reflection
Midway through the protocol, this patient chose to have her Mirena coil removed in favour of a more natural approach to perimenopause. It’s important to note that while the Mirena is often prescribed at this stage of life to reduce heavy bleeding and protect the uterus lining when oestrogen HRT is given, it is a contraceptive device rather than true HRT. The coil releases a synthetic progestin—not the body’s own natural progesterone—which can lead to side effects such as mood changes, bloating, and breast tenderness. By the time she came to me, she had also discontinued her oestrogen HRT due to overwhelming physical side effects. On further assessment, it became clear she had difficulties with oestrogen metabolism, which likely contributed to her history of oestrogen dominance.
While this patient initially experienced setbacks after the removal of the Mirena coil— including weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, and emotional fluctuations — we supported her body with nutrition and herbal medicine. Within 8 weeks, her cycle returned to a regular 28-day rhythm, and her hormonal symptoms began to resolve. Today, she feels balanced, energised, and empowered — no longer fighting her body, but deeply in tune with it.
